Cedar Island, North Carolina, is a small coastal community located north of Beaufort, about an hour from Emerald Isle. Just follow Highway 70 to the end of the road and you’re there!
While most of the island is part of the undeveloped Cedar Island Wildlife Refuge, it is also the launching point for visitors traveling between Ocracoke Island and the beach communities of the Crystal Coast.
Things to Do in Cedar Island
The Cedar Island Wildlife Refuge encompasses a large portion of the area, making it the ideal location for visitors to get out and explore. The marshes and higher grounds in the wildlife refuge are fantastic spots for bird watching and capturing photos of the beautiful scenery that abounds in virtually every direction. Other outdoor activities include fishing, kayaking, boating, shelling and horseback riding.
Cedar Island is home to the famous Driftwood Restaurant and Ocracoke ferry. Take the ferry to Cape Hatteras National Seashore to see the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Make a stop in Ocracoke Island, which is part of the national seashore, to see the Ocracoke Light, the oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina. So, whether you are there to just sit back, relax and enjoy the miles of unspoiled beaches or are passing through on your way to the ferry for a fun-filled day of adventures, you’re sure to enjoy time spent in this serene coastal community.
