Visit the Beaufort Historic Site in the heart of the downtown Beaufort historic district. You’ll find numerous historic buildings, including the Carteret County Courthouse, which was built in 1796.

Here in North Carolina’s third-oldest town, you can enjoy seasonal festivals, site tours and special programs about the area’s coastal heritage. Go on one of the many informational tours offered and learn what the former fishing village was like back in the 18th and 19th centuries. Discover restored homes, the courthouse, county jail, apothecary shop and an art gallery.

Double-Decker Bus Tours

Hop aboard and see Beaufort’s Historic Site from atop the BHA’s “new” 1967 English double-decker bus. Lively narrated tours impart the folklore of old Beaufort to riders. Tours depart from the Safrit Center at 130 Turner Street.

The Safrit Historical Center

The Beaufort Historic Association’s Visitor Information Center provides brochures, maps, information on area events and a museum gift shop. On display is an exhibit chronicling Beaufort’s maritime history.

Old Beaufort Shop

Located in the Safrit Historical Center at 130 Turner Street, the shop has a wide variety of hand-woven rugs and place mats, hand-dipped beeswax candles, hand-woven baskets, children’s toys, unique gifts and books on Beaufort and North Carolina.

Beaufort Old Burying Ground

Old Burying Ground Tour

Take a walk through Beaufort’s 300-year-old history on the Old Burying Ground Tour. As you walk through the shade of majestic live oak trees, see the historic gravesites and hear the fascinating stories of those that have been laid to rest as told by an experienced tour guide in period dress. Tours available: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, June – September.

Mattie King Davis Art Gallery

Housed within the historic Rustell House of Beaufort Historic Site, the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery is the oldest in Carteret County. Open year-round, the gallery features the work of over 100 local and regional artists.

The Warped Weavers

Volunteer weavers create beautiful rugs, placemats, pillows, and more on antique looms and demonstrate their craft in the Leffers Cottage.

The Beaufort Herb Society

A volunteer group which maintains the herb garden located behind the Apothecary Shop and also sells herbs and plants.
