Start 2027 in the Atlantic at the Penguin Plunge

Join hundreds of people to run into the Atlantic Ocean at Circle Regional Beach Access in Atlantic Beach to raise money for a Carteret County charity. The Penguin Plunge, run by the nonprofit Penguin Plunge, Inc., starts at 1:00 pm. The 2026 event drew 762 participants and raised $17,000, split between Crystal Coast Hospice House and Hand 2 Hand Down East.

2027 Charity: Carteret Literacy Council

This year’s proceeds go to the Carteret Literacy Council. The council offers adult literacy programs and a new initiative aimed at improving reading and math scores for at-risk students in Carteret County.

Penguin Plunge in Atlantic Beach

Registration & Fees

Online registration opened October 1, 2026, and closes at 11:59 pm on December 26, 2026. After that, you can register on-site starting at 10:00 am on January 1. Every participant must sign the Penguin Plunge Liability Waiver.

  • Adults (13+): $15, T-shirt not included
  • Children (12 and under): $10, T-shirt not included
  • Registration with T-shirt: $30
  • Registration with sweatshirt: $45

Register online by December 1 to guarantee your shirt choice. Shirts are handed out only on the day of the event, so arrive early for the best selection. Not getting in the water? Register as an official Towel Holder and support the cause from dry sand.

Contests

  • Biggest group: Register with your family, friends, or coworkers under one group name.
  • Best costume: Judged in individual, child, and group categories. Keep costumes family-friendly.
  • Oldest and youngest participants: List your age when you register to be counted.
